Friendlies in CoMO and other bizness.

Next weekend we're supposed to meet up with the new KC polo crew in Columbia for some friendly play. Saturday, August 22nd. Leave the StL around 10am, play at noon till we drop.

Still waiting to hear about a team for worlds.

The North Americans were amazing. They pulled it off with a crew of 15 polo players working pretty much half-time for two months. We should probably be happy we aren't submitting a bid for 2010. Many people said how excited they were about the lock in. Folk from NYC and Seattle are planning to attend.

The 7th Midwests will be in CoMO on November 7-8, 2009. We may be asked to take out-of-towners from Lambert to Columbia. More on that later.

The afterparty for the New Belgium Urban Assault Race will be at Langenberg Field (next to the tennis courts) in forest park from 10am til 2pm. $3 pints of New Belgium stuff and a look at all sorts of interesting bike folk and bikes (an FBC-er works for them building freak bikes for these and other events). I will be there before polo on Sunday, 8/16.

folks from Austin, TX plan on being at the lock-in! stoked!

Ben said...

There are not enough words to express how epic the Lock-In is going to be.

Five months remain to track down adult sized footy pjs.

Is there any news about our special guest??

Lucky said...

When T- gets back into town and settled, we'll have a club meeting about how "epic" we want this to be. Everyone who wants to help out will be given something to do. Food, drink, door prizes, entertainment, money.

Oi! This ain't an IM chat window. If your conversation only involves two people, use email. If it involves the whole club and potentially the entire poloverse, post it here.

Last nights games were some of the most fun I've had playing Bike Polo.

Thought I'd share.

next week lets have a cage match to the death with the soccer guys for the court. I think that would solve our problem permanently.

Also, I will not be attending friendlies in como this weekend. I have prior commitments that cannot be skipped. Give them hell stl.

Polo tonight: 6:30pm at Tilles Park roller hockey rink. Corner of Fyler and Hampton. Bring lights and a generator if you have one.

Ben said...

We're giving up on Lindenwood?

Surrendering to the Soccer suckers?

I just tuned my chainsaw.

Lucky said...

It's actually closer to me, T, Cole & Lee. Further from Toph, Nick, and Ross. But if we can get it every Wednesday without waiting it's worth almost any price.

You can still bring your chainsaw. That park is swarming with kids.

Ben said...

Works for me.

That freshly oiled chain will go through kids like a warm knife through butter.

Toph A. Loaf said...

ben please dont kill me with a chainsaw. lee, i know this technically still counts as talking about topher buying a polo bike but.....topher bought a polo bike. see you sunday at tilles right? or is that just wednsday.

Ben said...

I just sent a lengthy email to the Parks Department about the lights at Tilles.

I was sure to sound like a concerned parent and the voice of many families in the surrounding neighborhood. I dropped bombs about how providing lights for the rink ensures that children are outdoors leading active lifestyles and safe in the confines of the park while under the watchful eye of their parents. I also mentioned the hours of prime park usage being wasted because it’s too dark to do anything once the Sun sets.

Hopefully the right person reads it and provides the “quality” lights I politely requested.

I was also sure to avoid any mention of “Bike Polo” since it’s clear they don’t want us anywhere near their precious hockey rinks.

Toph A. Loaf said...

ben, i only wish i was as productive as you at work....i got a new polo bike though.

Anonymous said...

I have a Gary fisher Marlin mountain bike for sale if anybody wants it. Its a medium or large. No disc brake, has v brakes. Straight rims and suspension fork. Alumiunum frame. Looks alot like Lee's bike. $75 if anybody wants it to customize into a polo bike. I know you probably can find one cheaper if you look around, but i was just letting you good folks know. I guess Evan or some of the new guys could use this thing. Its nicer then country road for sure. Im gonna C-list it if i dont hear from anybody.

PS Eugene went by the maplewood court the other night and said lights were on. I went by at like 11:30 and they looked off, so who knows how long they stay on for.

Lucky said...

Here's the offical Memorial park website, where it says that the park closes at 9pm and that bikes are not allowed on the in-line hockey rink.

Ben said...

I'd still be willing to try that park out. They don't want kids riding their bikes on the rink simply because they can, but bike polo could be a different story.

Rules are meant to be challenged, right?

Lucky said...

Kind of. That'd be a lot of rules to challenge at once.

1. Bikes are prohibited in skating rink area.
2. Checking, fighting, or rough play is not permitted.
3. Alcohol is prohibited in skating rink area.

And the kicker for us: Hours of permitted use are sunrise to sunset.

Toph A. Loaf said...

is this the rink at hanley ind court?
1. they just redid the floors and they are horribe, not even the hockey players like them anymore.
2.the doors dont work, one does not close all the way.
3. there are always, people playing hockey there.
-we could try maplehood.

Ben said...

I propose a "Roller Rink Tour." We should start hitting each and every rink in the STL area in an attempt to find a rink that will allow us to play past sunset once Daylight Savings Time hits. I'd hate to have polo limited to once-a-week cause it's too dark too soon after work on weeknights.

Roller Rink Tour 2009!!!

Ben said...

Roll Rink Tour 2009:

http://www.stlhockey.net/rinks/

- MRH High School
- Mt. Pleasant Park
- Francis Park
- Memorial Park Rink
- Steinberg Skating Rink (when it's not ice)

Keep in mind: Tilles may get around to fixing those lights.

Toph A. Loaf said...

i am down for the tour de roller rink. i think we should really consider MRH. it is in a parking lot, so people who drive could tailgate after polo. and also since it is in a parking lot, the lights stay on pretty late. the only problem... it is in the backyard of the police station so if they wanted to get us for park curfew, they could and probably would.

new players are always welcome, we have everything you need to play. EXCEPT BRAKES, if you bring a bike, please have brakes on it.
Love,
Anchovy

Ben said...

Polo Rules.

1. Don't be a dick.
2. Don't ride anything sans brakes.
3. Don't throw your mallet.
4. Maplewood rink is beautiful (Manchester & Big Bend)

Toph A. Loaf said...

"no brakes is out there and he is coming for you"... just not at polo. when are we going to start playing at maplewood.

Ben said...

I vote for Maplewood tomorrow.

Toph A. Loaf said...

we should maybe try and play some holiday polo at lindenwood on monday.

Tim D. said...

I used to play fixed no brakes. I of course had a proper polo ratio. I've only seen Goldie from Dayton play freewheel no brakes.

Anonymous said...

That goldie dude was nutso. We just had a few newbies showing up on bikes that had little or no brakes and they were just disaster. Like human missiles you had to avoid. It wasnt fun.

Anybody wanna weigh in and comment on where we should play tonight? Lindenwood, Tiles or Maplewood?
Personally i hated Maplewood. My Vote is go back to Lindenwood this eve. Lee sounded like he shared this thought. Unless i get a strong reaction not to go there, thats what text im sending out.

STL BIKE POLO said...

The only redeeming quality of Maplewood is the lights. The court is way too slippery. It also seems to be in Maplewood, much further from most of our houses than Lindenwood.

Ben said...

I enjoyed Maplewood. I especially enjoyed being able to play until 10pm. Yes, the court was slick. But being able to play until 10 far outweighs the non-grippy surface (in my mind).

None of the courts are close to me, so diving an extra five minutes isn't a big deal to me when I'm already driving 18.

As soon as Fall rolls around and the sun stars setting at 5, Maplewood will be our only choice for weeknight games anyway. We might as well start establishing our Wednesday night presence there now.

That's my opinion.

In the end, I just want to play polo as much as possible. It's like crack, and I need my fix.

Anonymous said...

"As soon as Fall rolls around and the sun stars setting at 5, Maplewood will be our only choice for weeknight games anyway. " arghh. i hate you! this is such a reasonable statement.
...Is there no lights at Lindenwood?
I forgot.
Anchovy

Ben said...

There are two lights at Lindenwood.

And one of them flickers on and off unannounced.

And those lights only illuminate half of the rink.

In short, Lindenwood (as much as I love it on Sunday afternoons) isn’t cut out for late evening/night polo.

Anonymous said...

Well what about Willmore. The night we played there it wasnt bad..was it? Once it gets dark even the courts with lights pretty much suck. I just cant play on that slick court. Maybe im making it worse then it is. i just called the parks department and asked for lights to be fixed at Tilles roller hockey court. Call tomorrow, if we each call this number every few days, i bet they fix it.
289-5300. Im going to give this number to the lil soccer kids and tell them to call.
Anchovy

Toph A. Loaf said...

wont be there today. cuddle on STL. see you sunday.willmore is solid. not slick like maplewood, soccer is a major concern.
bad news dudes, i dont know if any of you have seen this before but i saw soccer at maplewood for the first time this weekend and it did not look good. im seriously concidering putting a U-lock at lindenwood...

Ben said...

Willmore has some light. They're not great, but it's enough to play past dark. If people don't mind changing courts at dark (and if the soccer players have finished playing at Willmore), we have enough cars to get bikes from Lindenwood to Willmore. But I also see chainging courts every week as a way to drop a few players that lose the desire to play once we start packing up and heading to Willmore.

The rinks at Willmore, Lindenwood, and Tilles are all in high demand. In contrast, the rink at Maplewood was empty and waiting for us (no one to pressure off the rink...no one to play the "you have one hour" game with).

I honestly don't care where we play. I just want to play for a decent amount of time. I don't wanna show up, play for a measly 90 minutes, and have to go home becuase it's too dark.

I don't have a problem with any of the rinks we've used. I'd play anywhere. I just wanna play.

Toph A. Loaf said...

any other nights we can play? tues thurs maybe? occasional friday?

Anonymous said...

Im out for Thursday nights. Friday nights are out for me also. I bet alot of people would be down for more polo, depending on the night. Start looking for a lit parking garage we can use come winter snow/rain time.
-Anchovy

Ben said...

I noticed a parking garage next to The Phoenix Saturday night. It's gated, but we could climb inside.

Ben said...

ps. It's lit.

Ben said...

With the help of Google Maps and satellite views, I was able to make a list of at least six parking garages that could house STL Bike Polo during inclement weather. I'll probably go scout these places Friday night or Saturday night. If anyone wants to join me for a ride all over downtown, let me know.

Photos and garage reviews to follow.

Toph A. Loaf said...

tuesday night polo? i know for sure there is at least one on morganford.(garage that is) and about twenty in clayton, off side streets from hanley. central etc. kind of far out though and law enforcement could be a problem.
