Bustin' Balls Left and Right

Four balls met their demise today. Our wicked-hard shots and this extended cold snap are both going to leave us with a mountain of broken balls. So if you're driving past The Sports Authority or a Total Hockey store between now and Wednesday, pick up a yellow hockey ball so we can keep playing Polo in subfreezing temps. I'll be buying one too.

Yellow Franklins will survive this ridiculous weather? We had some of the tie-dyed Franklins and we snapped two of them tonight. It was 6 degrees, but still....

I have no idea. We broke at least 4 orange balls today. Yellows are supposed to work below 32 degrees. We'll put that claim to the test.

4 points of business:

1) Cold weather balls discussion

2) Let's co-ordinate our food making for the lock-in, so we don't all buy/make the same dish to eat 4 times over 23 hours.

3) I am anointing Ben to be our club rep for the North American Hardcourt council, unless anyone else wants to do it. Any of you are welcome to it, and/or can run for regional rep too.

4) Who among us can make a pinata big enough to hold balls and a coupla heads that folk can charge at on their bikes with mallets?

I'm working on a basic "city guide" for the Lock-In. What are some places worth mentioning. So far I've got:

The Zoo
City Museum
Art Museum
Arch
A-B Brewery

Are there any more spots we want to share? I'm open to suggestions.

From the Skatium, the places people need to know how to get to are: The Scottrade center (for those going to the blues game), The DElmar lounge (for the dance party), Mt Pleasant, their host's houses, and the highways home.

Ted Drews one on Grand one on Chippewa.

Although the Grand location might be closed for the winter.

T- can we turn off anonymous posting?

1) Any ball that won't break is fine with me. We don't have that many days of really cold weather to really worry about it. Get some yellows and we'll see how they work. Reading other peoples opinions will mean nothing. We need to see what they play like and how WE feel about them.

2) Jen has got vegan chili covered. It's cheap and easy to make a lot of. It's also damn good. I will also buy the hotdogs and veggie dogs and the related stuff for them. I have Sam's privileges so I can get anything else we might need there. (plastic utensils, plates, napkins, beer cups)

3) Yeah, Ben will do great. I am not terribly worried about all the fancy talk about the council. I just like having fun playing polo with my friends.

4) I can get some cardboard from work. Someone else get some news paper. We'll all get together after polo next weekend or something to make the thing.

5) What exactly is Delmar Lounge expecting from us in return for their food? It is a LONG way from the skatium. I don't think we'll be interested in riding there during the lock-in. I won't be.

6) I'll be out of town next weekend.

7) Ben - send me a copy of that map in PDF if possible. I can make some notes on it.

8) anonymous posts - I think we can all deal with a few posts that call us lame from time to time. I wouldn't want to keep people from posting about where we're playing, what time etc. Some of our regulars even post that stuff anonymously.

9) LONGEST COMMENT I'VE MADE ALL YEAR

I love the pinata idea! would it be possible to make the pinata in the shape of our "big tides" mascot?

another place to add to the "city guide" might be The Wine and Cheese Place on Forsyth. it actually has some of the cheapest beer prices in STL and is located next to a metro stop.

the wine and cheese place also has a great selection of hard liquor shots that fit in your pocket, including Absinthe

Those little shot bottles would be awesome in a pinata!

Don't worry, Trent. Delmar just wants some people to come eat dinner there on Sunday night and perhaps stay for the Nothin-But-90s dance party that starts at midnight if anyone is up for it. (this was previously stated) They aren't expecting anything, it would just be courteous to return the favor for all the free food they are donating since they are our only food sponsor. They are also giving polo players special drink prices on Sunday (I think $1 16oz cans of PBR and some sort of whiskey special, but I have not confirmed this).

I want the pinata to be shaped like Andrew WK.

Are we going to have another meeting before this thing?

Map Locations:

Tequila Wild
Mt Pleasant Park

Tequila Wyld is a stone's throw away. I'm going to be sneaking out of the Lock-In and over to Tequila Wyld the entire night.

Sunday at Delmar I can swing. I got confused. I thought we were talking Saturday night. The piƱata is going to great.

There were zero cold weather balls last night at the Sports Authority by my house. Keep your eyes open.

Yes, we should totaly meet again before the lock-in. Sunday at Felix's again? Or somewhere else?

Lucky said...

Robert from the Skatium wants to meet with me and one or two others at 7pm on Thursday to show us how to use the scoreboard, the PA, and talk about what's going to happen.

Who's available Thursday evening and thinks they'll be in a condition to help administrate the lock-in during the event?

nick said...

i can come...

remember its a marathon not a sprint...

I should be in a condition to be around all evening...

I need a propane tank for the fryer I'll be heating the chili on. Anyone have one?

I won't be around Sunday.

It's official! Ben Simon is our club rep to the North American Harcourt what-ever-the-hell. Every so often, he will be asked to poll our opinions about something and report back to I-don't-know-who. So, if he starts asking leading questions at the court, be sure to give him lots of confounding, contradictory information.

Ben said...

If we get enough snow and anyone goes sledding tomorrow, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!

Anonymous said...

Wow that was super fun. I love our garage freedom

Ben said...

Polo was fun and driving home in the snow was even better.

REPOST. (Toph was asking about the Kona and Patrick bought a Wal-lmart bike) Sooooo..
I have a CHEAP ($40)rigid fork GT Mtn bike if anybody wants it. Needs work, if you are handy this is good. Small-medium size. 4130 cromo.
I would also sell my brown Kona unit for $300 if anybody is interested. Ready to rock. needs nothing. Im not in a hurry to sell this. Payment plans available.
I probably have 10 bikes (at least)right now if anybody needs one. At this point im just storing them up for spring. most under $100, most are road bikes however.
Its cold or i would go check and get a more accurate count.
ALSO i have a Tobboggin in my antique mall booth if anybody needs one of those. Its long, its wood.
Thanks
PS. i hope this comes off ok. Im just saying that if you guys need something, chances are i got it.

Ben said...

That Kona is dialed. If it's sold to someone outside of STL Bike Polo...tragic.

Someone needs to buy that from Anchovy.

Anonymous said...

Anchovy only plays polo to increase his customer base.

Lucky said...

So do I.

Ben said...

Times are tough. You gotta make ends meet.

Anonymous said...

Anchovi. Will you sell me some of your amazing polo skill? -Jake-

Honestly guys it makes no difference to me. Come the first sunny week in spring i can sell as many bikes as i have via Craigslist. Last year it was 10 bikes sold in 2 weeks. Im out to break that record this year.
Jake, no skills for sale. I think it was the TI shaft i had. It survived that monster joust with Ben. The head exploded, shaft was fine.

Lucky said...

I've got just a couple of those smaller diameter ones left, or I can hook you up with St Cago's new, experimental, thin-walled (and therefore lighter) larger diameter mallet heads. Let me know, seeker-of-ski-poles.

Somebody get some pink balls from Johhny Macs (on watson has some). They are 30-40 degree balls. As long as no super hard shots happen, thats out best bet. I think those feel the least brittle during regular play also.
